As legislation going through parliament seems set to allow small venues to host live gigs without a licence, tell us what you think the ingredients are for the perfect performance space
For Anna Calvi, it's a place where every tiny detail of the music can be heard and appreciated, whereas for Roots Manuva it's somewhere with a grimy, semi-illegal flavour that turns him on. Johnny Marr gravitates towards a space with a rich legacy and a sense of grandeur – and history matters too for Wild Beasts, who would rather taste the dust of the world's oldest music hall than play somewhere functional and soulless with sticky carpets.
But what makes a good music venue for you? What's your favourite in the UK and why?
For this Sunday's Observer New Review – and online now with a gallery of pictures – we've asked some of the country's best-loved musicians to nominate their favourite venues in the UK and give us a performer's perspective on what makes them so great. Now we'd like to hear from you.
The question of what makes a great venue seems particularly relevant at the moment. Earlier this month, a live music bill amending the 2003 Licensing Act was cleared by the House of Commons, paving the way for small venues around the country (with a capacity of under 200) to host live music without having to apply for a licence. At a time when the UK music scene is increasingly dominated by large corporate venues devoid of individual character, this should come as welcome news for music fans. The bill, which is expected to pass through the House of Lords without opposition, looks likely to inundate us with new concert-going options.
With this in mind, what ingredients do you think are needed to make a knock-out music venue? Are intimate venues better or is it equally possible to have a transcendent experience in somewhere the size of a football field? Is it all about perfect sound, or does atmosphere matter more?

"The power of the old master is still impressive," attested journalist Jacob Biazza bandleader Max Greger.
Hugo Strasser still convinced with the velvety sound he elicits from his clarinet. For his 85th Birthday gave him the Sueddeutsche Zeitung with the attribute of the "born clarinetist." Five years later he gives Erroll Garner ballad "Misty" still creeps the factor that brings the audience to indulge. But not only the solierenden blowers are masters of their craft.
"The man at the piano", Paul Kuhn, also assumes the position as a singer in the swinging trio. If he "Unforgettable" and "Mack The Knife" intones, is more than just a hint of Broadway in the air. As an instrumentalist, the youngest member of the band still pulls all registers of a first-class ragtime and jazz pianist. After four years of abstinence, it itched a doyen in the fingers of his colleagues to cheer on the keys. Paul Kuhn, who was in the role of guest conductors often the opportunity to lead the SWR Big Band is delighted about his return, when he einheizen not only the orchestra and his bandmates will sondenr.

Too Many Projects at the music
In March 2011, I spent a few weeks in Ticino, specifically in Val Verzasca for bouldering. Together with Paul Robinson, Fernando and Alex Förschler us get some first ascents and repeats of existing bouldering. Even if we could climb ultimately not all of our projects, we have found some real pearls and just had fun bouldering. Also present was the camera and come out is a free, nearly 20-minute film of our first ascents and projects. Have fun watching ...
Info
Actually, I just wanted to spend a few days in beautiful Boulder Ticino, but after Alex showed us soooo many new blocks with such good lines, we just had to lend a hand. So we quite often shuttled between projects, and new bouldering classics and from the originally planned as a weekend trip times were then Boulder trip almost 3 weeks nonstop bouldering. Alex dedicated himself mainly to his ultra-tough project "ProTouch" - here was a pinched eponymous football - and I amused myself, meanwhile, on the blocks in the area, in which Alex gave us some of his projects. After cutting and editing the entire video now a 20-minute film of unserern first ascents in the Verzasca Valley has emerged.
Story of Two Worlds
Story of Two Worlds
During this time Paul also managed the commission of "Story of Two Worlds", a Boulder, Cresciano, who waited for nearly nine years on a first, full repetition. I was lucky to be there to film the trapdoor and photographs - many of the photos have probably seen already in the conventional newspapers. The video footage was committed I left Paul for his own film from trip € "The Dirty Thirty," which should come out in the near future - exactly when that will be, as the film is wound up - you'll read it here.
Now available here first blocks of fresh, new projects and subtle beats ...
